Agreed.
It doesn't sound like Paul either.
I would think it most likely that “spiraled in”
is simple the reporter taking license with the language. We know, for
example, that is was/is common vernacular among the military fliers to refer to
any crash as “augured in”.
We know that he had
turned to return to land. He may have been turning again in an attempt to make
the farmers field, who knows. Speculation beyond that at this point is
futile, and could be misleading. We know only that it is sad – very
sad. I never met Paul, but just from these pages, I knew I liked him.
