We have NO reliable information.  A canard [with an engine failure] trying to turn back to the runway and running out of airspeed might look EXACTLY like it "spiraled in".  Rudders provide a LOT of roll authority.  Paul is together enough to know that nobody on Unicom would be in a position to help him so radio transmissions would likely amount to needless distraction. Could we hold off on speculation until:
A.  We have some even vaguely reliable information
B.  Some assurance that Paul's survivors are no longer subscribed.

As a courtesy to the family if nothing else ... Jim S.

Another point: We don't know if he declared an emergency. By the information
we have there was no transmission of any kind. He is an experienced pilot
and he had the time to do so? Also the canards do not spiral to the ground
unless there is a control input or faulty controls.

... The discription of events didn't, that is DID NOT sound like an engine
failure. It sounded more like a rigging or structural failure.

Wasn't it Paul who expressed concern about the proximity
of the aileron controls to the accessory belts, and what
might happen if the belt came off?

"Spiraled in" doesn't sound like just an engine failure.
