Greetings,

I figured I'd pass along some numbers from today's cowl throttle testing.  It seems to work, but I'm going to need a bigger door.  The current door is about 80 sq inches, and the total exit area of the cowl is about 120 sq inches.  I figured that would have to be enough to bring the temps up, but I was wrong.  I can probably add another 15-20 sq inches pretty easily, and I'll try that tomorrow.

It also looks like I'll have to reduce the size of the oil cooler scoop a bit, which is good news really.

Cheers,
Rusty

Tested the cowl throttle, and found out that it didn’t do as much as I had hoped. Clearly going to have to add some area to the door tomorrow.   Also found that I have a nagging oil leak (spoke too soon) somewhere around the front cover.  Removed the oil metering pump block-off plate, and resealed it with the magic gray stuff.  It was the only plate that I left from before, and it didn’t appear to be sealed that well.   I’ll find out tomorrow if that’s it. The engine continues to run well.

Conditions today were about 80 on the ground.  62 at 3000 ft.

Climb, 6200 rpm, 110 mph, to 3000 feet.  This was described as “bat out of hell” by folks on the ground, but my VSI is acting wacky, so I’m not sure what it really was.

Oil- 175

Coolant- 206

MAP at 1000 ft.- 27” (must resolve this low reading)

Cruise at 3000 ft, and 5500 rpm, 150 mph, cowl baffle open.

Coolant- 148

Cruise at 3000 ft, 5500 rpm, 150 mph, cowl baffle closed

Max rpm in only half a lap of the field at 3000 ft-   7100  (people on the ground said it sounded like they were at Indy).  Forgot to note the speed.
