There is a sharpened bolt or screw on each side of the balance bar to keep it
from rocking. The point of the hangers is higher than the pivot point, so the
scale is very sensitive, like a tail heavy plane. As you can see, when the
balance bar starts to move one way, it starts adding in a bit of mass from the
bar as it passes over the pivot point. The pivot bar can be anything strong and
long enough to span between the two jack stands. Or cement blocks, or
whatever.
Limit the travel of the pieces to just a bit. One inch is plenty. Start the
setup with a level to get the same travel on both sides.
