Perry/ Bobby,

I found a heat shield material matting, I think it's made from Kevlar   -
it's not cheap but I didn't need a lot of it. They use it to insulate the
council bus engine bays.

I used silicone straight out of the tube and worked it into the material
with a squeegee and left a small layer (1/32" - to 1/16") of silicone on the
surface.

I did try diluting the silicone and found it messy  and not entirely
satisfactory, but found the squeegee very straight forward and easy to
manage. Did one side one day and the other side the next.
