I was concerned about this, so I built a vacuum relief valve,

Todd, rig a micro switch to light a LED on the panel when the spring opens. That'll be a good indication of when the filter needs cleaning. If the filter never clogs, that will indicate that a filter is nothing more than an unecessary airflow restriction (no clog == no dirt == why have a filter?)
