Actually, it seems to depend on how you set up your email software. Mine
(Netscape 7.2) is set up (by me) for bottom posting. I simply hit
<reply> & started typing. The only time I end up on a line with a
previous bar/karet is occasionally when I'm trimming a previous post.
It's always obvious & easy to correct. I prefer chronological order,
but I try to conform to previous posts if I'm #3 or later (except here,
of course).
This stuff really is a problem on this list; far more than any other
that I frequent. Colors & stuff are interesting, but when someone starts
typing on the same bar/karet and a 2nd person re-uses a previous color,
and some are inserting text & others are top posting while still others
are bottom posting while....electronic Tower of Babel.
Enough of that. Let's talk about something people aren't so passionate
about, like red state/blue state or foreign policy. ;-)

Quick hint to cure the 'same bar' posting problem:
If you bottom post, go beyond the bottom signature, left click, hold & drag down past all the 'stuff' added by the list server. Release the mouse button & hit <enter>. This will clean up multiple copies of list info & give you a fresh line free of previous bars or karets.
