How about a ball valve - those with zero flow restriction? You could put one
in line and manually control flow - maybe a remote lever of some sorts -
that would be like a cowl flap basically. hmm, I sound too theoretical

===>  Interesting idea, but you'd have to set a minimum open point to make
sure you flowed enough coolant through the block at all times.

Just to show that I can think of a wackier idea that anyone else... I've
wondered about using my electric fan to control excess cooling.  I could
have a reverse mode to impede the flow of air through the rad.  Could be
kinda hard on the fan though.  Good thing I have that 100 amp alternator :-)

PS- I just ended my first 2 week vacation period, and logged 134 hours of
time working on the plane.  I got a LOT done, and plan to take two more
weeks off starting the 26th.  By the end of that time, I hope to have the
plane finished, and ready to run (pending Tracy's EM-2).  Once the engine is
behaving fairly well, I'll take it to the airport and put the wings on.  The
end is in sight, which may be the only thing that gets me through the cowl
work :-)
