From Clive Clapham
Lycoming style engine mount accessory cover

I am investigating casting an accessory cover to replace the stock Mazda cover. So far I have roughed out a mock up in foam. With the following objectives:
  • Replacement of stock Mazda cover & water pump housing in one piece with integral filler cap.
  • To be able to bolt straight onto stock Lycoming ( conical ) engine mount. Dynafocal possible would depend on demand.
  • Relocate water pump & alternator to same unit
  • No distributor drive height problem by deleting distributor (crank Sensor)
  • Weight saving about 15lbs
  • No new aircraft engine mount to fabricate weight saving and cost saving for many existing aircraft from 0235 to 0360.
  • Same thrust line as Lycoming
As this is still in the design and fabrication stage.

I would be interested to have input from anyone who is potentially interest to asses demand and my design goals are on the right track.

The idea has some merit (obvious reasons) but has the following down sides:

1.  It appears to me that it will place the engine & redrive further forward than the Lycoming it replaces thus altering the CG. (not a big problem)
2.  The stock cowl will no longer fit the airplane ( a fatal problem for fiberglass-phobes like me)
3.  With the availability of efficient Mazda engine mounts for many aircraft designs, there is little or no weight advantage to using the Lyc mount.

Not a disadvantage, but the proposed mount scheme is not necessary to get rid of the distributor.  Mazda did that long ago. (1986).
