>>>On another line, even though my friend was kind enough a few years
ago to go up with me in my GAMI / JPI EDM-700 equipped '71 RG and give
me a tutorial on how to do Lean Of Peak (LOP) management, I have been
very reluctant to do so under the "Fuel is still cheaper than parts"
theory (when my other friend & I went up, we actually got it, using the
GAMI's - to 90 deg. LOP and still running smoothly if not strong). On a
long trip back from out East I had an unusually good tailwind at low
altitude and decided to play with it. Went to 50 deg LOP according to
the gauge and was AMAZED - the engine actually sounded smoother than the
100 deg ROP I usually use, and the cylinder head temps dropped almost 50
degrees!
I was showing 265 or so on the hottest cylinder (NOT #3, interestingly
enough, like it does in ROP ops) and about 245 on the coolest, when
under my usual ROP settings they would have been running about 300 +- 15
deg. And the fuel consumption dropped from 11 gph to a measly SEVEN! It
did give me about a 15-20 knot hit on my groundspeed, which I didn't
like, but not having to stop for fuel more than made up for it.<<<
7 gph on a 200 hp engine give a very low Bsfc........however this is not
a turbo-normalized engine and the hp output at those settings is
probably pretty low......
