The gallery that connects the inlet and outlet inside the water pump casting just below the thermostat, should this be blocked if not running a thermostat. I could be wrong and probably are but with this open wouldn't the water take the route of least resistance and recirculate back through the engine.  
 
You are 100% correct sir.  Here in the land of anti-metrics, we tap the hole to 1/2" NPT, and screw in a pipe plug.  If you multiply, or maybe divide by 25.4, you can probably come up with a locally available tap to do the same thing.  
 
BTW, you'll like the -7.  I've spent a few hours in a friends plane, and it's really comfy.
