<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
After all that's transpired over the last few weeks (this weekend included), I thought it might be appropriate to pass along the LML's List Posting Guidelines (LPGs) as a little reminder. The latest "urban legend" flurry started as a result of my reinstating open posting status to a small group of subscribers (whose strict adherence to the LPGs won them that privilege in the first place) a little too quickly after the virus incident. BTW, for the record, the virus that appeared to have slipped through the cracks was originally sent to the LML by someone with open posting privileges... neither I nor my cousin, Chip, had the opportunity to head it off at the pass. In the future I'll continue to manage the LML according to the LPGs, and that should answer all your questions about why I might trim a signature or reject certain posts. I've also removed all open posting privileges permanently to insure that everything goes through the approval process. I won't be checking for urban legends, however, I will simply apply the rules and not approve anything that doesn't adhere to them. None of this is personal, so please don't take offence or feel that I've singled anyone out here... I just want things to be back to the way they were and this small change accomplishes that task.
Have a great Memorial Day.

The List Posting Guidelines follow:
Please submit all Lancair-content Mail List postings to lancair.list@olsusa.com, and select an appropriate title for the Subject field in the email message. Please note, the Lancair Mail List is a subscriber-only venue... only messages from current subscribers will be accepted for posting.
Any posts submitted which are not directly related to Lancair-specific topics will not be approved for posting to the list nor passed along to the subscribers, although certain aviation-oriented posts which may hold certain interest to all or segments of the LML readership may or may not be posted to The List, and their acceptance will be at the discretion of the list owner. By all means, DO submit information on experimental technologies, alternative power plants, avionics, aeronautics, and the like. DO NOT submit posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, Cessna 152 wheel pants, long-lost buddy's phone numbers, etc, etc.
Posts which are specific to a particular Lancair model should include the FAA designator in the subject, LNC2 for the two-seaters, LNCE for Lancair ES, and LNC4 for the IV and IV-P. Posts which are not model specific that cover topics which are applicable to all models should not include a model designator... this includes but is not limited to subjects such as paint and finishing, avionics, instruments, electrical systems, general composite assembly, inspections, test flying, aeronautics, etc.
Posts should generally be non-commercial in nature, although members wishing to purchase or sell specific aircraft components, materials, supplies, or tools on a personal basis are welcome to post their needs/items wanted or for-sale to the LML. Commercial advertisements or notices will not be accepted for posting to the LML, however, commercial entities wishing exposure to the readership may sponsor banners or links from this site and should contact the list owner for details.
DON'T post requests to the list for information when that info is easily obtainable from other widely available sources. For example, posts requesting the Lancair factory phone number are just not appropriate.
Please THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be relevant to some segment of the readership... if you have to wonder about it, don't send it.
DO NOT use the list to respond to a post unless you have something relevant to add, that will be of broad appeal. "Way to go", "I agree", and "Congratulations!" are all responses that are better sent to the original poster directly, rather than to the list at large.
When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly contribute something valuable.
Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack other listers, or try to take moral high ground on an obviously controversial issue. This will only result in pointless debate that will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth, and resolve nothing. This includes comments about the Lancair factory, its kits, products and personnel... we are all believers in the Lancair product line here, and as such are likely aware of its strengths and weaknesses. Naturally comments and/or corrections regarding factory materials are most certainly appropriate, especially if they are or could be construed to be safety related. In any case, keep your comments and criticisms constructive and they will be welcome.
Remember that your post will be included for posterity in a set of archives which are growing at a prodigious rate. Try to be concise in your posts, but by all means don't shorten them to the extent that your main points can't be understood. Just avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and responses, but don't sacrifice clarity for terseness.
Please be as careful as possible with your spelling, as it is important that key words in particular be spelled correctly. When searching through the archives for information on fuel gauges, for example, any message containing "guage" will not be found. The missing message could be the one with just the right answer. Please use a dictionary and/or a spell-checker and proofread your posts before submission.
Please disable any HTML email formatting and submit your posts as plain text only. Set the word wrap "ON" in your email program and use a wrap length of 76 to eliminate the long-line/short-line problem that results from wrapping at 80 characters or more. Posts submitted with embedded HTML coding will not be approved for posting.
(For those of you using MS Outlook Express or Netscape's Communicator, here are pictures of the settings to use to insure that your posts will format properly and not foul up the archive displays. (Pics available on website only.)
Disable any automatic attachments that your email client wants to send, as the listserver software doesn't forward them as attachments but rather decodes them and appends the decoded attachment as a string of ascii garbage at the end of your post. (The submission of attachments (photos, drawings, documents) to be made available to the LML readership is covered in the Attachments section below.) Do not send VCARD or other automated signature blocks, as they will only be removed and your post will be re-submitted on your behalf without them.
Keep your signature brief. Acceptable items include your name, email address, aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line about where you are in the building process is also acceptable. Avoid bulky signatures with character graphics or commercials for your business... they consume unnecessary space in the archives.
When replying to a message please be sure the Subject field in your reply editor reflects the subject matter of the post to which you're replying, and not the volume/issue data of the Mail List issue that contained the post. The best way to insure proper threading is to copy/paste the exact "Subject" heading from the original post into your reply's "Subject" heading block, over-writing the volume/issue data which may be there. Please restrain yourself from coming up with a new, 'cutesy' subject title, as all you'll do is disconnect your post from its intended thread. Please note, this is very important now that the Lancair Mail List is being archived interactively. See the "Archives" section below for how to get to them.
Please do not use an automatic 'quote-back' of the post you are replying to. (It's ok to quote-back a sentence or two to clarify the post that your reply addresses, especially if the original was posted several issues prior, otherwise use the subject field as it's intended to identify the content of your reply.) Any messages including a quoteback of an entire Digest WILL NOT be approved for posting. The negative impact that quoting complete original posts has on the size of the archives cannot be overstated. DO NOT DO THIS!
When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT then go ahead and reply to The List. Be aware that clicking on the "Reply" button in your email program does not necessarily send your response to the original poster. You might have to actively address your response with the original poster's email address.
Please refer subscriptions to the Lancair Mail List to the subscription URL, that being: http://pop3.olsusa.com:100/guest/RemoteListSummary/Lancair. Subscription requests sent to the lancair.list@olsusa.com address will not be processed.
The List Owner/Editor reserves the right to edit part or all of any submissions at his discretion.
