In the fighters we had a short (3" blade) with a padded handle end. This
would go through the tough plastic canopy if placed at the shear line where
the plastic canopy part met the canopy frame. It was the shearing effect of
the point going through the plastic at the rigid line of the frame that
seemed to allow it to go through. This knife was sharpened on both sides of
the symmetrical point.
The canopy of our airplanes would yield in a similar fashion. Of course one
could also ram a sharp point through anywhere in the honeycomb material.
Once a line was started ... a big foot could finish the hole in short order.
For what it's worth for your thoughts.
