Last fall, I had a main tire go flat on landing. (Our airport is being worked on, so it appears I ran over some sharp debris - it was a relatively new tire). Anyway, the tire was changed out on the ramp without the usual hangar amenities, and several people handled the wheel during the process. Last Saturday, the same tire went down on landing, this time with only about 10 landings on it. When removed from the airplane and the tire and tube was off the gear, a close inspection of the wheel - halves revealed a very small raised burr or nick at the edge of the center parting line. The burr was about 0.06" long and stuck up no more than about 0.032". It obviously had occurred during the earlier tire change and wasn't noticed for whatever reason. Close inspection of the tube showed that the burr, as small as it was, was the cause of the flat. The wheel material is easily dinged as it's relatively soft aluminum, so be warned: check yours carefully when changing tires - it appears that it takes very little to damage the tubes. Waiting for new tires and tubes.
