It's been a few months since we built my stab/elevators and like everyone
else's, mine was off as well. I believe what we did was mount the hinges on
the spar from the center out, using a laser level to ensure they were
straight. What we ended up with was at least one end of the elevator rising
noticeably above the stab out near the counterweight. We had to trim the
stab's trailing edge to fit the elevator travel and then built up the
surface of the stab with filler until it was properly faired with the
elevator and bevel it to the elevator to make everything move smoothly.
There was enough filler needed that we put a layer of 1 BID over it so itb
doesn't break off when the stab flexes in flight. It was a lot of work to
fix something that shouldn't have been necessary, but it looks OK now.
We also ran into a problem with one of the fast build wings having an
outboard rib that was not tall enough, which I found out from a Lancair
pilot has been another long standing problem. In order to make the aileron
fit, again, we had to do a large filler buildup on the wing after closing it
and trim up from the underside of the skin. Had we known beforehand, we
could have built in a flox ridge on the short rib to make it match the other
wing. Maybe someday the factory will start sharing known problems like this
with the builders so we can compensate for them from the front side of the
power curve.
