You nailed it cold. I was astonished at the mis-alignment. The hinges are so far off that my notoriously uncalibrated eyeball saw it right away. Two of them were way off the centerline of the spar. Not only that, when I ran a very taught fish line through the hinge bearings/bolt holes, the two mid hinges were off. I talked to Carsten yesterday and he said to check the alignment again and get back to him if a hinge is off center and he would tell me what to do. Mucking around with the flox pads under those hinges might work, but that will still not put the hinges along the centerline of the spar. I would have to drill out the hinge nut-plate rivets, which, by the way were riveted to a separate pad and now the heads are between the aft spar face and the pad itself. Carsten told me that the spar was probably not perfectly perpendicular and the hinges had to be set to compensate and to get a straight centerline for the hinge bolts. Looks like I'll have the same problem you and Joe and others are having. Since the spars of the fast build elevators have been bonded in, maybe the hinge brackets on them could be a bit off their spar centerlines to compensate. No? I'm not terribly happy with this situation. I've done a Glasair Super II H-S and elevators from scratch, so I'm reasonably familiar with the problems. Would have been far better to have had the Lancair fastbuild be very close to the money!! Any thoughts? We haven't done a thing to the H-S so maybe they could give us a new one and take a look at this one!!??
