Hi Gary,
I built my fuel system "by the book" and haven't had any trouble so far. If
I were doing it over, however, I think that I would use a different method.
You probably have had the same thoughts as I have concerning the
non-removable screens in the wing tank. What if they work? How could you
possibly clean them and remove the offending gunk? Frankly, I don't think
that you could. If I had it to do over again, I'd put in flanges that would
accept the screw-in finger strainers and route the fuel lines through the
aft portion of the wheel well and into the fus under the seats. The finger
strainers accept AN fittings and you could build the system with hard line.
This would also avoid routing the fuel along the crowded fwd spar area
where the aileron push rods go. If a screen clogged, you'd have a better
chance of getting it cleaned off. Another possibility would be to put in the
fuel pick-up lines with no strainer in the tank and route the fuel through a
strainer or filter somewhere downstream. No matter how you build the
system, the ultimate answer is to make sure that you're getting clean fuel
going into the tank and strain the fuel, if necessary, before it goes in.
