I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice on getting the alignment correct
between the horizontal stab and elevators on my ES. Having gone through the
builder's workshop, the stab and elevators were pretty much complete; we
just closed them. Without having gone through the process of aligning the
hinges and skins, I'm not sure what size gap to expect. I've trimmed the
stab skins back to where I expect to get a thin, even gap (the manual says
0.05 inches.) I've mounted the elevators with a couple of hinge bolts. The
problem is that the elevators are binding with the top skin of the stab to
the point where I only get about +/- five degrees of travel. The binding is
not even. It only occurs towards the outboard ends of the elevators, worse
on the left side than the right. It looks as if the outboard hinges on the
elevators are hung too low, causing the outboard ends to sit too high by
around 1/8-3/16 inch. I've measured the bearing blocks on the stab, and they
are aligned and even.
My main questions are:
1) Does this sound like the hinges are not properly aligned, or do I just
need to trim the stab skins more?
2) How long should I expect the stab skins to be, measured past the aft-face
of the rear stab spar?
3) Does 1/8 inch sound like a typical misalignment?
Finally, are there any builders in the San Francisco area (Livermore) that
might be interested and willing to come by and critique some of my work?
Thanks,
Joe Santos
