I did not intend to suggest that all turbo'd engines could or should be
operated at WOT at cruise.
I think I said:
"On the normally aspirated engines, I recommend that all takeoff,
climb and cruise operations be done with wide open throttle... (WOT) even at
cruise at 1000' MSL. However, one can modulate the horsepower by using the
red knob and the blue knob."
Someplace else, I probably also said that I operate my 8.5:1
compression ration turbo-normalized IO-550 at WOT (which is 30"). Thanks
for making it clear that the boosted engines need to come off the
throttle somewhat for continuous cruise.
Having said that, I have operated a number of TSIO-520 and
TSIO-550 engines at 32 and 33" and sometimes 34" while well lean of peak. I
have never seen them "complain" (that's a good term, by the way... I like
it) about it, as long as they are well lean of peak.
During FAA flight testing for the certification of the
turboGAMIjector fuel injectors, we were required to do a climb cooling test
with my IO-550 (8.5:1 CR) set up from the "normal" 30" all the way to 35"
of MP. We took it to 25,000'. It ran just fine lean of peak at all
manifold pressures up to 35".
On the 8.5:1 engines, one ought not to try that except under those
special test and instrumentation conditions. Looking at the data, I see no
reason that the TSIO-520/550 engines with 7.5:1 compression ratios will not
operate just fine up to about 33", provided they are operating smoothly lean
of peak and the CHTs are well under control.
However, if you are sensing that the engine is "complaining" above
30", then I would like to get a chance to go along and see if I can figure
out what is going on.
