Not only DOES TCM RECOMMEND LOP operations,  they mandate lean of peak
operations for the TSIO-520BE engines in the Malibu.

In fact,  the biggest problems with those engines resulted only from the
failure of TCM to accomplish an adequate pilot education program and make
sure the pilots did not "add some fuel for cooling" and end up operating
rich of peak (and therefore, very hot) rather than operating lean of peak
and relatively cool.  Malibu owners who religiously operated the engines at
50 to 60 or more LOP have had good results.

The IO-550G manual for the Mooneys specifically includes power charts for
LOP operations.   The Beech manual for the A36 / IO-550 specifically
recommends  operating the engine either lean of peak or rich of peak, but
not AT peak.

I am unfamiliar with any TCM engine that was ever designated as a "lean
burn" engine.  However,  the TSIO-520Be engine is designed to only be
operated at lean of peak settings at high power cruise.  Perhaps that is the
engine you were referring to.  It is still a widely used engine in the
Malibu fleet.
