Could it be that those with bad experiences running LOP set their mixture in
the following order? 1. lean mixture till the first cylinder peaks. 2.
Cautiously lean 50F further.
Doing this would probably cause some of the other 5 cylinders, (or other 3
for us mortals), to be dangerously close to peak, would it not?  With a
single probed EGT it would even be more hit-or-miss.
