Great news!
I have just finished testing the new low drag exhaust on the Walter
powered Lancair IV P.
The cowls have been modified to close up the gap left from the Let 410
exhaust hole and were only in undercoat at the time of testing.
On the ground the engine is a little noisier. Sounds more like a PT6
now.
I no longer have a soot problem on the sides of the airframe and very
little exhaust smell can now be detected on the ground.
In the air the airframe is noticeably smoother, there being less
airframe rumble.
Engine performance appears to have remained unchanged. There are no
perceptible changes to exhaust temps versus compressor RPM.
At 14,000 ft I have gained 15 knots of IAS and at 25,000 ft gained 10
knots of IAS.
The exhaust looks great as well. I will post a photo in a couple of days
once the cowls are repainted.
Our next endeavor will be to do some flight tests of different wing tip
designs.
Regards,
Frank Fry
