Micah,
I can tell you that from my perspective, and I think most Californian's will
agree, our tax situation is one of the worse. There is a sales tax. The amount
is dependent upon which county you live in. Here in the San Jose area it is 8.5%
Then of course there is the annual licensing fee which like automobiles here, is
based upon the value of the aircraft. Let's say your Legacy comes out to a value
of $100,000.00 (okay I know that might be low, but lets make it easy). While
there is no guarantee that our tax assessor's would catch it, you could be
liable for sales tax on the $100,000. Then figure on approximately 1.15% of the
value of the aircraft to license the aircraft annually. Not a pretty picture.
Assuming you reside in Oregon, and not California. Oregon has no sales tax and a
very low flat fee to license an aircraft annually. Single engine, twin engine so
forth. If you live in California and build in Oregon the aircraft has to stay
out of the state for a minimum of six months to avoid sales tax. The California
annual licensing fee will have to be paid of course.
Hope that helps and yes I am not a supporter of the always increasing taxes on
to all of us.
