Micah,
As you know, I'm building my ES in California and the state is chomping
at the bit to get their mitts on my wallet. I contacted the Franchise Tax
Board when I got the kit and was told that they'd collect sales tax after it
was flying. Apparently, they'll estimate the value of the plane then and
tax me on it. I'm keeping a detailed file of invoices in case they try to
gouge me, but I have no doubt that it's going to be a five figure hit.
Once the plane's flying, I'll also be subject to a 1% annual property
tax, which will probably cost me around $150 a month, give or take. I also
just received an inquiry from the county I live in wanting to know the
status of the plane so they can tax it too.
I'm already taxed out the wazoo in California, so the addition of the
plane is giving me the incentive I need to seriously look at moving
elsewhere after my daughter graduates from high school next year.
