In reference to the Lycoming engine, I've found that putting in high
compression pistons will lower your TBO time.  It makes the engine produce
more heat and takes the norm imbalance of the cylinders and makes them worse.
If you are looking for higher HP from your cylinders and make them run
smoother, you need to match flow them on a flow bench.  For ex - 360 Lycoming
engine that should produce 180HP you put all 4 cylinders on a bench and float
them you'll will get about 160-165.  When you open them up and bring them to
specks you should be able to get 180HP.  If your looking for more, open the
port to 1% and the exhaust to 3%, the highest capable of those cylinders thus
far has been 204 HP on a straight valve Lycoming engine.  If you were to take
IO-360 200HP angle valve, that has Venture Valve Guides, these can be opened
up to approx. 220-230HP.  The reason the variance of what the HP is, is the
fact that you have to flow it to the lowest cylinder to make all cylinders
equal.  One of the ES's that I recently completed was at Oshkosh last year on
display at the Lancair tent.  That aircraft had a used 520 engine rated at
285 HP.  I ceramic coated the intake and exhaust and installed an electronic
ignition and it ran super cool and burned a mere 12.5 GPH at 8,000 ft.  And
with a used 520 engine, we were getting a bit better than the published
numbers that Lancair states.  I probably could have leaned it back even more
so since it was running so cool but we figured gas was less $ than a new
engine!
