I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to those who knew Tony.
I had the privilege of meeting him and flying with him on a demo
of the sfs.  I hope this loss reminds us all that we are merely
humans and that we need to approach our flying with extreme caution and conservatism.

I was quite intrigued at the post by Darus Zerbach concerning
his water-cooled and Electronic Fuel Injected (efi) equipped engines.
I e-mailed him, asking for some specifics, and I am quite impressed
with the numbers (although I don't know how much it costs yet -
the answer to that one is on the way).  Here's what he said:

MY TEST MULE WAS A 192 HOUR 540 THAT WAS ORIGINALLY RATED 260 HP.
THE STOCK BENDIX IS VERY RESTRICTIVE WITH A 1.8 BORE VERSUS THE
2.375 BORE OF THE EFI AND THE OIL PAN.  I ALSO USE CERAMIC COATING
ON THE INTAKE RUNNERS TO DROP THE HEAT.  WITH THE EFI IN PLACE THE
ENGINE JUMPED TO JUST OVER 300 HP WITH 9/1 PISTONS.  ADDING THE
INTERNAL CERAMICS TO THE PISTON/VALVES/CHAMBER RAISED POWER TO 319.
CHANGING THE PISTONS TO 10/1 RAISED THE POWER TO 345.

CUSTOMER ENGINES WITH THE CERAMICS ALONE ARE REPORTING A 20%
FUEL BURN REDUCTION IN ACTUAL FLIGHT CONDITIONS.   ON THE DYNO I SHOW 16%.

THE TEST MULE WAS ONLY TESTED FOR FUEL BURN WITH THE EFI AND
CERAMICS AND AT THE SAME POWER SETTINGS AS STOCK, SHOWED A 23% REDUCTION
ON THE DYNO.  IN FLIGHT TESTING ON A SAME CYLINDER ASSEMBLY 360
SHOWED A 27% REDUCTION.  THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DYNO AND IN
FLIGHT SEEMS TO BE FROM THE FACT THAT ON THE DYNO NOTHING IS EVER RAN FULL RICH.

Something to think about for those of you who are 540 gurus but
just need to have 300 hp.  How about 319?  Or if you're feeling
lucky, 345?  Keep in mind that it'll all still weigh less than the
550.  And if you figure in a 25% fuel burn reduction (ceramics and
efi), then you're down to the same fuel burn as the 550 (14 gph).
I'll post the costs as soon as I find out from Zerbach.  He said
the water-cooling "kit" with cylinders (no pistons), hoses, etc. is $16k.  Ouch.
Sincerely,....Aaron May
