The first magnetic compass in my 320 was a Vertical Card compass mounted on
the extreme left side of the panel.  All the electrical wiring, engine
instruments etc. are on the right side of the panel.  The nearest electrical
devices were the radios in the middle.  I calibrated the compass several
times on the compass rose.  With the best adjustment, I could get the
calibration errors down to about 5 degrees.  That was OK except the
calibration did not remain constant.  I was swinging the compass on a
monthly basis.

I finally wised up and took the VCC out of the panel and trashed it.  I
purchased a small, light compass at the auto parts store and mounted to the
canopy with RTV.  When I swing the compass now I can not find any
calibration errors greater than 1 degree.  Therefore, I do not have a
compass calibration card.  It's not just the electrical devices the effect
the magnetic field, there is also that big chunk of metal up front.
