Subj: IV - Fuel configuration
So, any words of wisdom from the learned ones?
Ed McCauley, Lancair IV-P -23.493 +/- 30% Complete
Ed,
Jim White and I closed our wings at Lancair in the fall of '99. The cores
we
started with had a plastic tube already installed in the leading edges, and
fuel all the way to BL 171, less a small "cut out" dry area for the pitot
tube. As it was already built in, we didn't change it, but if you are
building from scratch and installing winglets, the pitot tube could easily
be
mounted on a winglet and the whole outboard span used for fuel. We ordered
longer fuel tank probes to provide sensing from essentially BL 26 to BL
171.
These probes are installed from the wingtip rahter than the root as
originally configured. Strongly recommend this, It fixes several problems,
the biggest being that the probes are now replaceable without pulling the
wings. If you install the shorter probes so the inner most end comes very
close to the bottom wing skin, the amount of unmeasurable fuel in your
tanks
resulting from the probes being a bit short is very small.
We didn't install the tube in the two inner rear wing bays to make this
part
of the fuel tank because of concerns about aft CG, but wish I had done so.
(Have relocated the hydraulic pump forward to the baggage area to move the
CG
forward anyway). This was an available option, and Lancair has the tube and
associated parts available. Remember that there are some through bolts, etc
that must be sealed when you make these rear bays fuel tanks. I (now)
recall
the old wisdom, "The only time you have too much gas onboard an airplane is
when you are on fire."
Glad to add to this if you send me a message directly.
