I went to Charlotte, NC and flew Matt Hapgood's well built impressive
Lancair 360 with a Zehrbach, liquid cooled turbo normalized, some ceramics
and solid lubricants, EFI, and EI engine and a 3 bladed MT propeller. Matt
has solved the old problem of getting 5 pounds in a 3 pound bag. WOW, did
he get a lot inside of a Lancair cowl. The long engine mount helped.
It is a real Rocket ship. He has about 245 HP (the base engine is a
Lycoming IO 360 extensively modified) and the engine is smooth when it has a
good fuel supply. Matt has a what we hope is a minor problem with apparently
a fuel restriction which is being worked out.
On takeoff the airplane accelerated like a scalded cat to 70 kts, and
at a light flight test weight (full nose and 10 gals in each wing) climbed
at over 2000 ft/min. (ZEHRBACH says engine is good for over 240 hp at 34.5
inches MAP) The engine has no mixture or primer it is much more like your
car engine. Turn it on and it runs well!
The engine starts like your car, right now and is very smooth at idle
after a few seconds of warming up.
I gradually worked up to full power on several ground runs and the
airplane has plenty of rudder for full power takeoffs. It required about 1/2
to 3/4 rudder at low speed and no brake after lining up on the runway. The
first takeoff was very impressive, smooth, and quick. It accelerated to 100
Kts and was passing through 2000 feet in less than 60 seconds. The airplanes
fuel system currently restricts full power to about 50 seconds. Matt is
working on this.
Matt still chasing some gremlins after getting his oil temps down with
dedicated air inlet to oil cooler. But the temperatures are great for a
the first few hours of flight and he still has 320 cowl openings. These
might have to be opening up in the future.
Now planning to check the fuel system for a restriction and he is going
to get intercooler temps down with dedicated intercooler air and to make
more cowl revisions.
This is an exciting improvement.
