My Super ES has about 160 hours on it. During fueling for my most recent
flight I discovered a broken pivot pin in one of the gas caps. This is a
1/16" rolled pin that attaches the flip handle to the threaded pull pin. I
replaced it and did the trip. Upon returning I inspected the other cap and
found a badly bent pin that couldn't have had very many more cycles left in
it. I replaced it also. I am placing the caps on a check list of inspection
items to be done each oil change. The pins are cheap and take about 5
minutes each to change.
I suggest that anyone who has the original non-locking style cap inspect them
right away. If the pin had broken at a time when repair was difficult it
could have been a real problem. If it had broken in flight part of it could
have gone into the tank. Neither of these prospects is appealing.
In the mean time I will be looking for replacements that are more substantial.
