If you have already built four or five planes, the estimate might not be far off. The first time you will spend a lot of time learning the necessary skills as well as when to follow the manual and when not. For the inital project, I would doubt less than three times the estimate, and would believe ten. If you love to build things, are crazy about airplanes and have a tolerant family, go ahead. You'll never regret it.
