A few reasons why it may not be a good idea to have an "automatic" landing
gear system:
  
1). Every time you pull the throttle back past the "gate" the gear will come
down. You may or may not be below max gear speed.

2). You may have an engine problem and need to get the throttle off in a
hurry but would still like the gear up for best glide characteristics.

3) If the auto system was so great every one would have one.

In lieu of an automatic gear extender -- a well used checklist goes a long
way-- but then most pilots I have flown with never use one except on the
checkride.
