Check the spin down time. After shutdown listen to the gyro using a stethoscope (if you have one) or you can use a piece of tubing held between the gyro and your ear. You can even use a screwdriver (one end touches the gyro one end to your ear). Most gyros take about ten minutes to spin down. Listen for roughness as well. Try listening to a known good gyro so you’ll have something to compare to. Pressure/vacuum driven gyros will act a little different compared with electric ones. 2. After shut down either move the plane right away or wait 15 minutes for the gyros to spin down. If you jerk the plane around during that time when the gyro is slow and slowing it can bang around and hit the stops which is hard on the unit. (Remember when you played with a gyro as a kid and it got all wobbly before it stopped ?) 3. For vacuum (vs. pressure) driven gyros check the mounting of the inlet filter. If it is exposed to moisture or water it will get sucked into the gyro and rust the inside. I’ve seen this happen more than once.
