State pair charged with defrauding clients

CLARKSBURG -- Two people who ran an aircraft-equipment firm were indicted
Wednesday on charges they took down payments from clients, knowing the
company president was headed for prison and would be unable to deliver.

Darus Zehrbach, 53, of Morgantown, was president of Light Power Engines
Corp. of Morgantown, from August 1992 to the summer of 1996, when the
offenses occurred, a federal grand jury said.

He had been convicted of a federal crime in Pennsylvania in July 1993, and
he made contracts with eight buyers while waiting to report to prison, the
indictment charged.

It was unclear from the indictment what crime he committed in Pennsylvania
or whether Zehrbach is in custody, said Fawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the
U.S. Attorney's Office in Wheeling.

The two-count indictment charges Zehrbach and general manager Lee Ann Demus
of Fairmont with mail fraud and conspiracy to defraud their clients of about
$250,000.

Each faces as many as 10 years in prison and $500,000 in fines if convicted.
