You can have good filtering 100% of the time and good ram recovery simultaneously. With a high quality filter, such as K&N, of sufficient size you can reduce the induction losses to very small levels. With my installation at 4500', MP is 1.2" above the MP shown in the Lycoming zero-ram engine performance chart for the same altitude. My MP tapers down to about equal the Lycoming zero-ram number at 18,000'. So even up high, where IAS is relatively low, the ram effect still overcomes all the air box induction losses including the filter. My engine is carbureted, so I do have carb heat which also blocks off ram air when engaged. Alternate air for an injected installation would be much simpler. For those running filtered air through a filter from in front of the #2 cylinder, I am curious what the induction losses are or what full throttle MP is at takeoff. I have seen some of these installations at the Lancair fly in, but didn't think to ask at the time.
