Dennis, I used a T04 turbo made by Turbonetics on my 20B. I planned on
flying at higher altitudes (18K'), so I sized it to handle the needed boost
to avoid overreving (catastrophic failure). If you use a stock Mazda
turbo, you must have the compressor map, so that you do not exceed the
pressure ratio at higher altitudes. It has an Inconel tubine wheel which is
absolutely needed (Mazda uses this, too).
I have not used full hp of the engine, but it will easily make 300 hp @
6,000 at about 6 psi of boost. The factory rating was 365 hp at 6,200 rpm,
but I believe this was over 10 psi of boost. There's a lot of info to know
about turbo's and their associated systems (fuel injection, ignition, waste
gate control, intercoolers, etc), but overall it is a very efficient way to
carry hp to altitude and go fast.
Paul Yaw built a turbo 13B and made 265 hp @ 6,500 rpm which was detailed
on this forum a couple yrs ago. Remember, this is max hp and I would not
recommend that you plan on using this continually (too much fuel burn and
heat generation, plus reliability).
If you are puting together a NA 20B, are you planning on replacing the
lower compression rotors? If you do make sure you balance it correctly. It
will not work as well to turbo it afterward with high compression rotors
because of possible detonation. A stock NA 20B should make 240-250 hp with
stock rotors.
Hope this helps. Chuck

I would like to know what turbo is being used on the 13b & 20b
engine.
I am planning to use a 20b on my Wheeler Express. I want to use the NA
rotors
for the extra compression. I was toying with the idea of adding a turbo
later after I get the bugs worked out of the installation and get the plane
in the air. I would like to know how much boost and horse power are to be
expected and the pros and cons. Thanks ............Dennis Smith
