Last year, I complained about clanking noises coming from my brakes when I
pull the plane out of the hanger and also while taxing.  Added lubrication
helped a bit but the noise always came back and was quite anoying.

After calling Matco regarding this problem, the technical department informed
me that two components have been upgraded, 1) the brake plate (Part#:
WHLPBA1.25, $37.62@) and 2) the brake spacers (Part#: WHLBSPS, $4.52@).  Our
brake system has four (4) brake spacers and these components are now made out
out stainless steel.   Most of you probably won't remember what the brake
plate is or what it looks like.  This component is 'sandwiched' between the
main gear axle and the main landing gear, mine was made out of aluminum, the
new Matco upgrade out of steel (probably stainless steel also) and has
bushings where the brake spaces move in and out.  My old brake plate had a
lot of slop when I moved the brake spacers throught it by hand, new upgarde
has no slop at all.

BTW, this upgarde will only work if you ALSO have the newer main gear axles,
the ones with the larger diameter flange on the outboard side.  If you don't
have this gear axle, you'll need to get them from Lancair.  If you don't have
the newer main gear axles, your braking performance will be greatly reduced,
not good, since the new brake plates are not as thick as the older units.  I
had the newer main gear axles on only the left side initially, and
discovered, very quickly, that I couldn't turn right without excessive
pressure on the right brakes...

End result, no more clanking noises, period!  Life is good.
