You can then attach a rudder trim tab to this protruding 1/4 inch with small screws if required. With this approach, if you don't need a trim tab, you only have a small piece of aluminum protruding only 1/4 inch. The other advantage is that you can remove your trim tab and bend it for trim adjustment as many times as you want without having to worry about damaging your rudder when you bend the tab. As far as probability that you will need a rudder trim: I have heard builders brag that "if you build it straight, you won't need a rudder trim". My opinion is that if you say you don't need a rudder trim you have really had some fantastic dumb luck or you are flying with less than optimum trim.
