Early today, I received a phone call from my instructor, Peter, that he had
just had an engine failure with Michael's Lancair 320. Peter took off runway
28 early today for a leisure flight. He leveled off at 1,500 msl and soon
after, the engine simply quit! Pete was able to do a 180 and SAFETY landed
the Lancair on runway 10, using the entire 3,100-foot runway with enough
momentum to clear the active towards the taxiway. He said that initially, he
did not think he was going to make the runway and contemplated landing on a
nearby open field but the tail wind gave him enough push to make it safely to
runway 10. Some leisure flight, eh?
Interestingly enough, after checking the oil level, Peter tried starting the
engine on the ground and it actually started again, only to conk out when
FULL mixture is applied. Peter was able to taxi the Lancair back to the
hanger only if the mixture was leaned out a bit.
The engine is a Don George Lyc IO-320. I estimate that this engine sat
around for about 4 years prior to first flight. Peter did the first flight
on this aircraft last year. The plane has approximately 40 to 50 hours on it.
Since Michael, the owner, is overseas at the present time, Peter, myself and
a couple of our airport buddies (A&P's) are going to try and figure out what
happened this weekend. If you guys have any suggestions or comments, please
feel free to do so.
It's interesting that only last night, Peter was giving me the work-out on my
Lancair, night flight engine failure, complete panel failure, etc. etc....
This morning, Peter got HIS own, unintentional, work-out... GOOD SHOW PETER!
