It was pretty clear that a vacuum system to run one instrument was not reasonable so I opted for the RC Allen electric horizon at about $1500 and the B&C 20 amp standby alternator along with its solid state voltage regulator. The B&C circuitry is designed to automatically turn the 20 amp alternator on if the main alt voltage drops. Appropriate warning lamps signal that this has taken place. With the 28 V system, the 20 amp standby will run about everything needed, even in hard IFR, without running down the battery which will be needed for hydraulic pump operation on landing. Tha 20 amp alternator mounts on the same pad at the rear of the 550 as the vacuum pump and is a simple installation. Wiring, too, is straight forward. Bill and Tim at B&C are great to work with. I still have a little work to do the get the warning lamps working with Jim Frantz's annunciator since B&C system employs a flashing circuit as opposed to a steady one. The other advantage is less plumbing behind the panel, and through the firewall.
