Very well said Mike. I hope my post about the FAA wasn't taken out of
context. The folks there are in the most part very competent, in the area
that they specialize. What I was trying to get at is getting a good
inspection, with someone who is very familiar with the airplanes we are
building. The problem I had with the LongEZ, would have been easy to take
if in fact the guy would have wanted the airplane painted because of known
problems, but when the first thing the guy says is "Why is the nose sitting
on the ground?", doesn't the main gear retract too?" You've got to wonder.
On the point of getting dual during the flight test, I've known of a few
instances of guys getting checked out during test period, but you are really
sticking your necks out there if something happens. Like Mike said, your
insurance more than likely won't be valid. It's pretty cut and dry for the
FAA, (and DAR's) it's the "if required" part that you could possibly get
around, by detailing some flights where you are checking out a system, and
you can't do it "safely" by yourself. The FAA is real big on the safety
issue, and if you can convince your local FSDO guys that you are being safer
with 2 people, then they will buy it, or at least might.
