This troubles me. I read an article in Flying magazine recently where an
airline or bizjet pilot (might have been J.Mac, but I'm not sure) said
something like "of course, when the EFIS fails and we're on the raw needles,
it's an emergency situation..."
Weenies.
I fly a Cessna 150 in IFR with steam gauges and it works just fine. That's
the only way I've ever done it. I'm never even flown a plane with an HSI. I
consider it high luxury that I actually have a DME. (I tell the
controllers that I'm a Cessna 150 "Slant Alpha" in hopes of getting a little
respect, but it doesn't work.) That electronics suite is going into my 360
and that's all there will be. And I don't really think I'm in the minority
here.
I'm reminded of the airliner that almost flew into the San Francisco hills
because the pilots forgot to use the rudder with one engine out. They forgot
the basics of how to fly.
I'm not saying the electronic stuff is bad. Far from it. In fact, I'm
envious of those of you that can afford it, and look forward to the day when
I can, too. Like Brent says, with today's electronics, making an electronic
copy of a steam gauge is stupid. Figure out how to display (1) where you
are, and (2) where you want to go.
But don't let your basic skills disappear.
