Olsens calc on IFR Ranges, My 235/320 does about the same fuel burn etc., He most probably has extended wing tanks (15 Gals per side), me too, to total 43 Gals. On a 715 nm trip, my alternate is ALWAYS " up course" just in case of adverse winds. For example SLE (Salem OR) to LGB (Long Beach CA) is about 715 nm depending on routing. My alternate is BFL (Bakersfield CA) at which time I should know: 1, Current LA Basin conditions, 2, My fuel burn and have a pretty good idea of how to proceed. I try never to go into or out of the LA Basin on the weekends, (weekends are a ZOO,including Fri Afternons) We try to take off on any flight in the 6 AM Range (after some of the Commercial Pilots Reports are in, Re: Tops, Actual Freezing levels etc. We do not eat or drink anything before or during a four hour flight and my 70+ year old bladder does well. Oh yeah, my alternates always have fuel available at my arrival time( DUH) Many of the NE, UT, AZ strips don"t. Hope this helps..
