Bob Chesley and Jim Frantz both mentioned the sticky friction of rudder
cables under tension. I noticed this too when I started my checkout
after purchasing our Lancair. Together with the sticky feel, mine would
actually squeal! It disturbed me sufficiently that I stopped flying
until I corrected it. I did a search on all the old email and decided
on the Teflon powder solution that I purchased from Dick Simkanin. I
had exactly the same problem though, I did not want to disassemble the
rudder cables so I devised a high-pressure (100# compressed air) powder
injector from about $15 worth of fittings from my local Ace hardware
store. I wrote this up and Marv published it in the Aug/Sept 2000 (#46)
issue of “Lancair Network News”. I injected the powder and have been
happy ever since. In my case, only the right cable was the problem, so
to date, I’ve only injected that cable.
