I had the pitch trim run-away on me in my IV, in cruise flight it went to
full nose down before I could stop it, but it was compounded by a few events.
My wife was flying from the right seat and had trimmed nose down when the
button stuck, and she didn't say anything until she couldn't hold it any
longer. She kept trying to trim nose up, which stopped the motor from
running while she held down on the opposite button. By the time we got it
all together (???) we had full nose down trim and the breaker pulled and
weren't sure what had caused the problem, but we still couldn't move the trim
in the opposite direction. By reducing speed dramatically, we were able to
overcome the trim pressures and landed at the nearest airport.
The key here was that we could stop the trim travel by pressing the opposite
button, and pulling the breaker disabled the system, and reducing airspeed
reduced the effect of the trim pressure.
Know exactly where the critical circuit breakers are in your panel, one of
them is trim power, or as I've seen in many installations (and the newer
Piper aircraft), a trim master switch right in front of you.
