It's a very small modificat= ion of Bob Nuckolls' design (AeroElectric Connection) to use a Schotky diod= e bridge in place of separate bus switches to feed the avionics bus. This s= ystem has functioned for 5+ years without any malfunction...until last mont= h. Turned out to be a loose cannon plug at the firewall pass through, which= was easily fixed...after considerable effort to isolate/identify the inter= mittent problem.=20 ...but back to the thread: I have four Odessy PC 680s in 437RP (dual 28v sy= stems) and could not be happier. Last year I changed out the #1 set of batt= eries that I'd had since 2006--during building. Put them on my electric tow= where they are very happy...and still working fine. Probably time to chang= e out the second set at this annual as they are 5 years old now,, but that = would be precautionary...a practice I normally don't subscribe to for most = things. Still, I recognize that when they fail, it's usually sudden and com= plete; no "poor cranking" before as a warning. No problem, went to the second buss, started, flew home. Traced= one of the four Odyssey batteries (2 main buss, 2 secondary buss) had just= completely failed. I was a little upset until I checked the date code of = 2008. I got another from Amazon for $116 and everything is good to go. I can't say enough about the dual buss design in my Legacy. I've saved mys= elf at least three times from having to be stuck somewhere: 1) Main alternator failure (diodes) 2) Standby alternator failure (did not require the second buss to operate) 3) main battery failure twice. The Odyssey batteries are giving good service in the 4-6 year range but whe= n they fail, they fail fully and without notice.
