I attached a layer of left-over firewall insulation (fibrefax) with the red, heat resistant silicon, on the inside of the cowling. It worked. Also, I used several tubes of crisscrossing carbon ribbon folded 20-30 times to make a tube the size of my little finger to stiffen the lower cowling around the nose gear cut out. I also developed a small crack about two inches long that started where the NACA scoop was installed. I routed out the crack, filled it with epoxy and flox and put patches on the inside. It seems to be holding. The cowling screws are enlarging the holes as I remove and replace the cowling (countless times!). I've since started using the stainless tinnerman washers. Jim Michaels put a couple of layers of fiberglass along the edges. I don't know how it is holding up, but it sounds like a good idea.
