My Legacy has had Whelen rectangular incandescent lights since new. All lamps in the wing stub leading edge. The other nite, I flared during my late landing at Spruce and couldn't see anything on the runway so I just held and waited for the landing. Our runway is 200 feet wide so the lights on the side are in the next county. There are no center line lights and the surface has little reflectivity. I previously loved my night flying so I decided to change the lights.
I remembered David LoPresti had offered to fix them up one day last year when we flew down to LoPresti's First Saturday monthly breakfast and charity gig. I called him up and got 4 BoomBeams which I installed two tonight and made a comparison shot with the same exposure (1/8 second, full aperture, 400 ISO) versus the existing Whelens. I'm almost certain that when all four lights get installed, my next night approach will be much easier to handle.
The lights are a direct plug in replacement for my Whelens and the ballasts were connected to the existing wiring (28v) and will be click-bonded in place once I verify the setup. These are 60W HIDs btw. I'm very impressed so far. This message is 132k in size and no hard drives were injured in the preparation of this message.
