Agreed, Fred,

That was a strange one for sure.  I surmise that perhaps high speed and wind shear may have had something to do with it.  Total guess on my part but have lost friends to that scenario in the past.  It’s fun to rip through mountain passes when you have high performance aircraft, but things can end horribly if you hit a wall of air going a different direction.

Was any investigation conducted in the accident that killed Harry League and  his  check pilot, and any definitive cause identified? We need to get some lessons from these tragic accidents. 

 

I just lost a friend today in an 80% scale P-51 with a 530 HP Chevy engine.  It appears the gearbox, which was problematic, failed on take off.  There having been numerous fatalities with automotive engine conversions, we can derive lessons from that approach.   We have got to get accident cause so we can take away some lessons.
