In response to Matt Hapgood's question regarding the 2nd place reference in
the AirVenture Cup race
Behel finished 2nd OVERALL in the race with our mods with the 2nd
highest speed recorded behind Orion's Lancair.
Although the Rahm, Engineair V8 was 2nd in Class (unlimited) he was in
fact, 3rd Overall in the race with a slower speed than the Questair.
If Behel had been entered in the Unlimited class instead of the Sports
class he would have taken 2nd Overall for the whole race instead of
Engineair.
Because of weather the race leg from Kitty Hawk to Dayton was cancelled and
the race run from Dayton to Oshkosh. The speeds and times were as follows:
1 hr. 18 min. 38 sec 319 mph for Orion
1 hr 19 min 7 sec 315 mph for the Behel Questaire
1 hr 19 min 16 sec 314 mph for the Engineaire V8
In clear conflict with the race results, the Engineaire sales sign in front
of the aircraft at Oshkosh had proclaimed it to be a 385 mph aircraft.
The difference between wins in class versus Overall results also explains
why the ZEHRBACH powered Polen Special with the little IO-360 engine in it
could out run the Engineair Lancair in previous year races and take the First
Place Overall for the race in 98. Last year again the Polen outran the
Engineair to Dayton. However, the spinner fractured and blew off in the 2nd
leg causing airflow disruption into the cowl with resulting heating problems
giving the Engineair the chance to beat the little Polen for First Place
Overall.
